Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world. Nations have gone to war, thrones have been abdicated, and lives have been sacrificed all because of its presence or sudden absence. But is love strong enough to break the barrier of time? Many writers over the years have speculated in their fiction that it can, and Walters' fast-paced and entertaining romantic suspense novel sets out to prove it.
Ann, a divorced mother with two grown children, never suspects that the old album she finds in a mysterious bookstore will change her life. She is merely intrigued because her great-grandmother shared the same surname as the family whose history is chronicled in it. But then things begin to get weird. Visions of one of the men pictured, Patrick O'Neill, start to invade her dreams. Meanwhile a predatory coworker who refuses to take no for an answer threatens her life. Then, when the knife that will undoubtedly end her life is descending, a strange mist somehow transports Ann and her attacker back to 1870 England. In a younger body and in the role of a woman betrothed to the handsome but fiery Patrick, will she find love with a man from the past or death from the one who has accompanied her there?
The author's writing propels the reader forward in a gripping tale from start to finish. Although Ann and Patrick's story is at the forefront, other characters such as Malcolm, the stepbrother of Victoria whom Ann has mysteriously replaced, are equally interesting. Readers who are not bothered by the sexual explicitness of modern romance writing and who enjoy a historical setting combined with a touch of fantasy should find Walters' book well worth reading.
