Best Served Cold by Karina Dolehide Karina Dolehide
book review by Judee L. Spargur
"The manager looked up and assessed his potential tenant. The man's cold and distant eyes reminded the manager of a snake. His usual clientele leaned on the shady side, but he never felt threatened by them. Now he felt as though the newcomer would be able to snap his neck and not lose a night's sleep."
So begins this eerie tale of cold, calculating revenge and "honest, be there till the end" love. Rose Watson finds that "still waters run deep" on her quest for a new life in El Dorado Hills, California. Rose becomes the personal assistant of Alex Sanders, who is an engineering consultant with a lovable young son, Shawn. Alex's unstable ex-wife, Maureen, and her criminal friend Gerald plan revenge and kidnapping of Sanders' young son. It doesn't matter to Maureen that Shawn is her son also, because she never had maternal feelings for her child. She never could accept the fact that spurning your only child was not acceptable behavior for a mother.
Alex had divorced her shortly after Shawn turned two. He couldn't tolerate a lying, cheating wife anymore, nor an emotionally distant mother. Revenge, her intense feelings for revenge, drive her to attempt such outrageous behavior. What Maureen does to Patty, her own aunt, is horrific. Patty had tried to help her niece when she was younger, but Maureen didn't have the emotional make-up to accept love and turn away from evil. What sewer thinking got into this troubled woman's mind, that caused her to snap on Patty's sweet nature?
