Beyond Deja Vu
by Virginia Nygard
WRB Publishing

"She felt a gentle but insistent tug, like the ocean coaxing an idle bather to its will. An invisible tide drew her spirit into her body."

Love is a complicated emotion. In its purest state, it is unconditional and self-sacrificing, but when it becomes polluted by other feelings such as jealousy and insecurity, it can sometimes devolve in an unstable mind into obsession and an overwhelming desire to possess the object of its now hate-twisted affection at all cost. Nygard explores this theme along with several others in her complex novel of love, suspense, and the paranormal.

The book begins with a fatal car wreck. Jennifer Jenssen, a clairvoyant who gets occasional glimpses of the future, watches from outside her battered body the angels take away both their limo driver and her soul mate, Don Summers, in an event eerily similar to the death of her husband twenty years earlier. Severely wounded both physically and emotionally, she is taken in after she leaves the hospital by Chad Ryder, a family friend and celebrity newsman. Under the watchful eyes of Chad, his Irish "butler" Godfrey and her new personal nurse, Jane Ryan, Jennifer begins to recover. However, Chad has feelings for his charge that go way beyond friendship, and soon Jennifer begins to discover that perhaps she will have a third chance at love. But an ex-fiancé and convicted murderer also has his eyes on Jennifer and will stop at nothing to get her back.

In this sequel to Deja Vu Dream, Nygard tackles the intertwining themes of love, loss, obsession, infidelity, and forgiveness in a tale that is both entertaining and well-paced. The interaction between minor characters such as the exchanges between Detective Harrison Henley and his cat Widdershins add a charm and richness to the novel, as well, and help make this heartbreaking yet hopeful tale an enjoyable read for a quiet evening.
