Plenty of life coaching books offer guidance on how to reach end goals, while overlooking the journey toward reaching those goals. Carr uses a different approach, recognizing that the conscious decisions one makes are integral to present and future happiness and fulfillment. Rather than cheerleading with superficial encouragement, Carr offers substantive suggestions and insight born of her extensive experience working one-on-one with clients in her life coaching practice. Her results-oriented approach is easily adaptable to any reader's unique circumstances, whether the reader wishes to overcome a challenging life event, or simply feels stymied in reaching success and achieving happiness.
Carr begins her book with a perceptive discussion about the common barriers faced in life. Often, people are fearful of making transitions toward achieving their dreams. Although it can be frightening to leave a familiar environment for an unknown situation, doing so is often the first step toward personal growth and fulfillment. Carr proposes that life is cyclical and that each cycle of growth presents opportunities—if only one is open to transformations. Her work is intended to help readers recognize opportunities and take full advantage of each cycle of growth.
As one progresses through the book, one is asked exploratory questions to consider what defines a person, what talents exist, how one perceives oneself, and how one responds to changes in circumstances. The discussions on working toward personal fulfillment are punctuated by interactive exercises, examples from Carr's own life, and reminders to have faith in a higher power.
After reading Carr's book, readers may find themselves responding to situations in a new way. Readers are encouraged to make conscious choices toward fulfilling their dreams, rather than affirming external perceptions from others. Although making bold choices takes courage, doing so will "build a bridge to who we ultimately become."
