Papa Joe’s got a deep dark secret, but after a shady duo breaks into his home, he’s found dead. Maybe Joe told his buddy Sergeant Ambrose about the secret, but Ambrose has been poisoned to death. Meanwhile, the shifty and manipulative Angelina Gentry will do anything to get the secret and complete her course of revenge. They’re all after Jim Bowie’s treasure, a supposed huge cache of silver connected to the Alamo and its historic fall, but the prize is so well hidden that mere clues to its location have been passed down through the generations. All of this has been dumped in the lap of Joe’s unsuspecting grandson Nat Travis, a lifelong bachelor and high school football coach in a small rural town. Nat owes his life to Papa Joe, and he is not entirely without resources and one last chance for love.
In Come and Take It, Landon Wallace has written a treasure hunt, mystery, and historical fiction rolled into one. The narrative is fast-paced, and the characters do not stand around for long, but are pressed into action and churning through the pages. As vital to this story as unraveling the mysteries set forth is the beautifully interwoven history. It enriches the characters and connects the days of the Alamo to the present by both time and blood. While the setting shifts locations, the writing resonates with Texas and an undeniable confidence and honesty. Raising a flag for Wallace and Come and Take It.
