This dramatic story follows Deborah, a young girl living in a land and times where women were not treated as equals. Deborah, forced into an abusive marriage, must do whatever it takes to escape this life, gain her freedom and win back her family homestead—even if it means traveling to an elixirist to transform from a female to a strong male. Her quest leads her to Kassite, a slave worker, who takes an interest in helping her escape her old life and begin a new life as a male. Together they journey to help Kassite’s friend, Sallan, who helps lead Deborah on her final path to becoming what she dreams of.
Each chapter begins with a dream sequence where Deborah is soaring high above the land on the wings of an eagle. Each time, she is jolted awake only to find herself still caught in her dismal life and her quest to become male. Throughout her travels in this land, Deborah will come to realize that she can’t trust who she thought she could; she must battle her enemies, and this life path will be harder than she feared. A final test will have her questioning her entire journey, and she might even find that she had the strength within her all along.
The author paints a vivid picture of the geographical location and events of biblical times in this historical fiction story. Readers will be immediately catapulted back in time to the ancient travels along the Jordan River, with elaborate descriptions of the scenery and events that took place during that time period. The story is well-written, and readers are left wanting more, with the promise of another story to come.
