Easy as Pie at Bobby's Diner by Susan Wingate Blue Star Books
book review by Millie Hinkle
"'Where have you gone, Hawthorne.' The words weren't spoken for an answer. They whispered out in wonderment that one minute he was in her life, the next he had disappeared."
The reader will quickly cheer for Georgette, a hard-working, independent woman with a heart for her friends, as well as for romance. She takes the reader on a fast ride as she is swept off her feet by a gigantic man, both in size and heart. He adores her, and she wears his three-carat ring. This is a just reward for a woman who has recently lost a husband and is now co-owner of Bobby's Diner. Georgette is the focal point for her friends and neighbors, who have become her devoted family.
Bobby's Diner reigns in the small town of Sunnydale. It's an almost ideal place to live, but even small towns can become targets for intrigue and murder. A prisoner serving a two-year sentence is playing puppet master with the goal of taking over the diner. Several people have been killed in his ruthless drive. It becomes unclear just who is to be trusted, as old friends come under suspicion.
The author weaves a plot of intrigue under the unsuspecting noses of the owners of the diner. She only reveals what the reader needs to know at each step, but the reader still knows more than Georgette and cringes as she misreads the signs. When she does figure it all out, and she is the only one who can, she takes charge. Her courage in trying to rescue the abducted Roberta shows her dedication to fight to the death. This is a good read, perfect for a lazy afternoon.
