Fragments of Life
by Anita R. Gibbons
Xlibris

"On numerous occasions over the past five years I had felt my life was far too dependent on Carla Green. Indeed, sometimes I feel a distinct lack of any reality in my life before I met her."

This book offers readers a heart rendering look at how a courageous woman (author Anita Gibbons) decides to confront her loneliness by taking a gamble and embracing a relationship with another woman (Carla Green), despite eventually losing her to the devastating effects of cancer–while also experiencing tremendous responsibility for the welfare of her seven-year-old daughter, Stephanie. From the perspective of psychology, within the context of what the author experiences, her relationship with the deceased was difficult, which added another dimension to the grieving process. It takes some time, and thought, before Gibbons looks back on the relationship and adjusts to the loss. When she meets Carla, much younger than her, Gibbons is leading a somewhat mundane life with her daughter. As it turns out, Carla eventually becomes an invaluable assistant to Gibbons, in not only managing her publishing company, but in caring for Stephanie.

Gibbons literary style is fluid and powerful, as she describes each fascinating chapter in her life with Stephanie and loving partner, Carla. The author is so effective in conveying her deepest emotions, that readers may identify on a personal level with her in certain chapters of this book, particularly the Epilogue, when Carla undergoes chemotherapy for cancer and then dies from a massive heart attack. Initially, Gibbons is in fear as to what her life will be like moving forward without Carla. Overall, readers should enjoy this book, as it provides an up close and personal look at coping with the devastating loss of a loved one, with tips on how to overcome that loss and live a life that’s satisfying and full of happiness.
