Friends in Strange Places

"Use courage and wisdom . . . Violence is never the way!"

Into the forest and fantasy land go the readers of this imaginative story. The book fills a niche that needs more of its kind. It is a pre-chapter book, so if parents have an early reader with a big imagination who is beyond "See Spot run" but not ready yet for chapter books, this book is for them. However, this isn't a read-aloud story unless you can handle "Smiling Fluttersplots" without stumbling or sputtering. What it is, though, is pure fun to read with life lessons and rhyme thrown in.

This is the story of the main character, Saleech, who befriends Snugsnort, who, in turn, is trying to save his dragon friend, Zack. The story revolves around loyalty, friendship, open minds, and the "It takes a village" mentality. But there are also so many other messages slipped in. For example, Saleech, when challenged, says, "I will fight for my friend till my very last breath!" As Saleech keeps thinking she is about to meet her end, another creature swoops in to save her. They all come together eventually for the big climax rumble against Baddie Bill and the evil bats. But instead of violence at the final face-off, the witch swoops in and casts a peace spell.

With so much magic and so much silliness, this book brings to mind the long-acclaimed children's story The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. If you have a fan of this classic in your household or classroom, you must pick up this book. Graham's book is truly a treat.
