book review by Carol Anderson, D.Min., ACSW, LMSW
"In this book I will share with you the secrets to living with more enthusiasm, no matter what your situation is. You will discover how to tap into your personal power and brilliance so you can rejuvenate your life, both at work and at home. And you will discover how to create an engaging and purposeful life worth celebrating."
Full Wattage honors what it purports to do: helping to discover your personal power and creating a celebratory life. The book is divided into 18 easy-to-read chapters consisting of four acts: Act One, Uncover the Blueprint for Your Life; Act Two, Do What You Love and Do Best; Act Three, Clarify What Matters Most; and Act Four, Living With Full Wattage. The chapters not only contain valuable information and stories about living an engaged life, but also have a variety of activities to complete, including written exercises, meditation, and guided imagery. Also included are a number of recommended healing practices such as exercising, being with friends, connecting with nature, taking baths, etc. A complementary workbook, as well as other exercises and information, is on her website, although you must have the web address included within the book. The book and workbook relate to connecting to your CORE (clarify, organize, release, enthusiasm) and the power of purpose, strengths, and values. Exploring sabotaging thoughts and beliefs is also a focus. This leads to a "purposeful, strengths-based, values-driven life."
Some self-help books are rather simplistic with their basic information and condescending tone; however, this book offers insight into enthusiasm and leading a more connected life. While some of the information is basic (such as the healing practices), the material gently flows from beginning to end by building upon the core needs of recreating your life. The exercises are valuable and should be completed as they support one another to help expand the thought and behavioral process of growing and healing. The use of personal stories from her life and that of her clients adds a homey feel to the writing—a casual dialogue with pertinent insight. The information on studies regarding focusing on strengths, the tendency towards negativity, and the brain's plasticity adds to the credence of this work. Read this book to engage yourself, learn how to cope with stress, have fun, and live life with Full Wattage!
