n 118 pages, the book explores the
relationship between the author and her canine companions: Doeska,
Eugie, Ganny, Gally, Kringle, and Lullies. It begins with a Preface and
Introduction and then is divided into two sections, followed by a
Conclusion and Epilogue as well as a few notes. There are eleven
chapters including four chapters in Section One and seven chapters in
Section Two. Section One, Living a Dog's Life in a Human World,
includes writings on being in a pack of dogs, what it's like for dogs
to live in a human world, the fullness of the dogs' lives, and the
humor of them. Section Two: Ganny and BJ's Journey to Wisdom,
focuses on their life journeys, and experiences Ganny's point of view
with input from the other dogs, living in the present, as well as ways
to help the dogs evolve, understanding the right moment, accepting
life, and adjustments to life and death. The Conclusion focuses on the
interconnection of life while the Epilogue is about the dance of life.
The writing is a combination of expressive thoughts by Ganny and barks
from the other dogs as well as by BJ, the human author. It takes us
through the ups and downs of animal companionship with the love and
loss of these relationships. At times sweet, at times sad, the book is
an examination of how the dogs see life and how they relate to the love
of their human pack member. The insights into animal telepathy and the
use of a shaman are very interesting for, as all pet owners know, the
animal world understands on a different level of existence than their
human companions. The compassion of the dogs and humans when their
mates are suffering is beautifully explored, as well as the dogs'
compassion when BJ was ill. A book for dog lovers, and perhaps for all
animal lovers, it is a cute, easy read.
