For those whose devotional time has grown a bit stale, Rainbow has written a small book that is full of insights and surprises. Like his name, the nuances he reveals through these short quotes and their related understandings almost fracture the white light of wisdom into shards of glorious color. Treating common words such as “Time” and placing them where the reader is not expecting them causes a response that is unlike other devotionals readers may have read. Also, within this collection are a group of beatitude-like sayings. The reader will begin to locate many similar thoughts.
An obvious example is “Blessed are those who wait,” though most such quotes offer the merest hint of blessings and curses. The author has chosen to add many quotations that reveal the conflict between God and Satan. For example, “Satan uses human thoughts to destroy Them—God uses good thoughts.” This subject, which includes the involvement of humans in the warfare that began in the garden of Eden, is seldom discussed in devotional materials.
Rainbow’s thought-provoking book is meant for readers to interpret personally. By sometimes choosing unconventional sentence structure or punctuation, the author seems to be trying to deliberately reverse and twist the quote with its understanding text, a technique possibly done to elicit a strong response in the reader. If this is the case, standard editing would interfere with the author’s intent to surprise his audience. This 24-page devotional should not be quickly read. Instead, it needs to be chewed slowly and then consumed with purpose.
