Veer is just an average, seventh grader starting his first year at Medley Middle school. A vulnerable target of bullies, he thankfully has his best friend, Vidya, and the protection of his older brother, Jai. But while school may be a challenge, Veer and Jai share a hardship at home: Their father, Samir, is missing. No one seems too know what happened to him. The brother's suspicions regarding the disappearance of their surgeon father sparks renewed interest when they begin to see mysterious people lurking around their house. Veer, Jai and Vidya hatch a plan to search for Samir, while their participation in the Medley of Talents competition brings victory and personal triumphs, preparing them for greater challenges ahead. The deeper they get into their investigation, with clues left by Samir himself, the more danger they find along the way and must face a powerful corporation desperate for control of a secret virus.
The Good Virus is a tale replete with humor, adventure, science, and mystery. Through the well plotted narrative, Govind Mattay instills a certain believability in every situation his heroes face. Each character, especially the main trio—Veer, Jai and Vidya—is plausible, unlike the vapid characters so often found in many formulaic thrillers. No moment or action is wasted, propelling the reader towards the climactic end. It's also impressive to note that Mattay wrote this story when he was only fourteen years old and while the novel may primarily interest young adults, it can and no doubt will be read and enjoyed by older generations as well.
