A compilation of over fifty of the author's varied columns while working for a small city newspaper, this book revolves mostly around the people throughout Hoffman's life who touched him in some way. He gives a brief introduction regarding the topics with these articles, adding wisdom after the fact to already wise musings. It examines his childhood and the positive memories of the time along with descriptions of family members, including his closeness to his father, his high school and growing up years, his recovery from alcoholism at age thirty, and his long-term sobriety. Also included is his relationship to the natural world, his foray into politics, and stories of neighbors, doctors, ministers, coaches, teachers, and other mentors who have positively influenced him. It is often a tribute and a memorial to such people, but it is also a tribute to his belief in God, as revealed in the epilogue.
This book is a tromp through one man's life accompanied by the flora and fauna of real life as well as that of the natural world. Beautifully written columns allow the reader to feel as though they are a part of his memories, as they foster personal reminiscing. The nature-enhanced focus enables one to experience the same senses Hoffman does and the joy of such beauty. It is an intimate, sweet, honest, and loving memoir that is well-written. The tributes are mostly about male mentors. And although there is not a lot of specific focus on his Christian faith, his belief in and love for God still come shining through.
