"The mighty one sends us four seasons and more, 'He knows what will do us good. Shouldn't we adore Him?'"
Born on the mountainous island of Jamaica amid lush surroundings of rolling green hills and the beautiful bounty of nature, with loving parents and eight siblings, writer and poet Sylvia Deroza is clearly a product of an environment wherein prayer and reading the bible were central to her upbringing. The aptly titled Heavenly Inspiration gives readers insight into the fact that Deroza is still a deeply religious woman.
The opening poems of her collection pay homage to a glorious Savior. “God Created Me” is a verse that speaks to God's recognition of our own uniqueness and individuality. Clearly inspired by the beauty of nature, and the seasonal masterpieces created therein, Deroza's stylings are simple, yet descriptive and rhythmic. Through a variety of word patterns she generates a pulse of sorts, at times reminiscent of a sing-song Jamaican dialect.
Deroza's pieces are often autobiographical with poems covering a spectrum of topics. From heaven to holidays, love and family, pets to changing seasons, the author continues to emphasize God's creative hand in it all. Deroza's talent often serves as a literal gift to family and friends. One such example is a touching birthday valentine she wrote for her granddaughter. Undoubtedly, her words are written sincerely and from the heart. "Jesus Christ, He is the master of our souls," is a pinnacle statement. For Deroza, He is clearly the guiding force propelling us toward the future. For this talented poet and wordsmith, it is surely a future to include beauty beyond the realm of this earth—and life everlasting.
