A group of people who are predominantly strangers with one another all share a common thread in their past: Mirna, the widowed mother of two, fighting to bring her mother into the U.S.; Mariana and Pablo, the two migrant workers, laboring every day to pay for their children's schooling; and a handful of others dealing at some point with a mysterious lawyer who claims he can help them bypass the rigorous immigration process. Several agree, others exercise caution, but when Immigration Investigatory Brian Darcy begins to tie these threads together, it becomes a greater issue than just people sneaking into the country. A web of intrigue begins to unfold in front of these unsuspecting individuals, and soon they are trying to track down a forger and a murderer.
This title opens interestingly, introducing new characters each chapter for almost the whole first half of the book, but tying their stories together seamlessly in the conclusion. While it is a work of fiction, the struggles the characters face trying to find a better life are real, and those details are often more heartbreaking than the narrative itself. Between the sympathetic victims and the tireless efforts of Darcy to find his suspect and give the illegal immigrants he has tracked down a chance at remaining in America, there are plenty of characters to like. This positivity is well-balanced by the action and the ever-looming presence of the mysterious lawyer who always seems to be several steps ahead. This book will be best enjoyed by those who like their suspense served with a dash of honest humanity.
