The world of intra-operative monitoring is a relatively recent innovation in the world of medicine. This occurs when END/IOM technologists and neurophysiology doctors work together in harmony to help surgeons, essentially monitoring a patient’s nerve integrity during surgery. This has been revolutionary in the care of patients and has been booming in popularity in hospitals across the nation. In this comprehensive how-to book, readers are able to get a better understanding of the various methods in which a technologist can monitor a patient, as well as the rationale and science behind why these methods are so effective.
The largest focus of this book is on the science behind the various methodologies used, which, for those in this field, is obviously the most important aspect. It is the method behind the madness if you will. The verbiage and tone are well directed and appear to aim at actually helping readers understand the information. There is a tendency toward including an almost overwhelming number of medical and science terms throughout, but, in actuality, this is just the way a lot of comprehensive books of this nature are built, as they are not written for the average layman. It is still done in a tasteful way that helps readers progress. The various images used to aide the discussion can be useful in helping the reader further understand, as well as visualize, the science. There are more grammatical errors than would be expected in such a book, but it’s not so distracting as to deter the reader from continuing. Overall, this book would probably work best as a valuable, additional study tool for those technologists studying to get their C.N.I.M. certification.
