book review by P. Hooper
"The look, I took for fatigue alone, was mixed with desperation. 'Every minute he stays with the Flawtl is another day of living hell for him.'"
Courtney, an overweight 50-year-old, is dissatisfied with her stagnant life. An anesthesiologist, she craves adventure, but has settled for a monotonous routine. On a trip through the mountains, everything changes when Courtney's car hits a man. Severely injured, he asks for her assistance in getting back to his base. As she drives, it dawns on her that this is no ordinary man. In fact, he is an alien from the planet Karadan, whose task it is to protect the human race.
The man is the captain of the ship and discloses that he has been attacked by the Flawtl, an unknown enemy of human kind, who are stripping the Earth of valuable minerals. After getting the man safely back to his base, Courtney is asked to fulfill a dangerous mission: retrieve a vital organ that the Flawtl removed from Captain. If she fails, the Captain will die. Despite the imminent danger, Courtney eagerly embarks on the mission, with the assistance of a computer named Kaalix.
Action-packed, this is a story of awakening and self-discovery. Courtney is an extremely likable and enchanting main character, one who is easy to root for. The descriptions of the aliens, their technology, and their enemies are fascinating. The book is hard to put down; the suspense and ultimately, the romance make this a page-turner and an entertaining read.
