"What's inside the heart of the horse is what makes him."
Kitty, a palomino horse, had a rough start to life. Her mom died while giving birth to her in freezing temperatures. It was so cold that Kitty's tiny ears got frost bite and broke off. Kitty comes to live on a ranch, but the ranch hands never want to break her because of her shabby looks.
Her life changes when Farmer Buck brings her to Hillside Equestrian Meadows. Children beg to start ridding Kitty. She's groomed, walked, given yummy treats, and some much deserved attention, but that's not all. She begins to develop invaluable friendships with other horses that have had some difficulties in life too.
It's not all perfect though. Many of the prize winning girl horses snicker at Kitty because of her looks and lack of talent. Kitty learns not to let the remarks bother her. Her life is great and she's comfortable with herself. When it's time for Beau, the stallion, to pick his mate, the prize winning girls assume they'll win his heart. In the end, Beau picks the girl who is truest to her own heart. Your ears don't make you who you are, what you have inside your heart is what I think is cool.
Kalinowski's heartwarming tale is based on a true story. His knowledge of horses and their mannerisms bring the story vividly to life as important life lessons are taught. Children can't help but be inspired and uplifted as they see how believing in themselves can lead to extraordinary results.
