Launch into Reading Success, Book 2 by Lorna Bennett & Pamela Ottley Trafford Publishing
book review by Susan J. Illis
"Book II is a teacher-friendly program requiring only minimal extra adult time that could be through the use of teacher assistants and/or parents under the teacher's supervision."
Based on the belief that students learn best through personal involvement, this provides hands-on exercises aimed primarily at first grade students with reading difficulty as well as second grade students requiring remediation. Designed for use by non-teachers as well as professional educators, the plans are easy to follow, with all the tools lesson providers need to work with small groups of students.
Featuring eight sections (Units of Sounds, Rhyme, Onset and Rime, Discrimination, Analysis & Synthesis of Phonemes, Linkage, Integration of Sounds, and Plays) containing 79 lesson plans, the books also includes student record sheets. Clear instructions and outcome expectations will enable the instructor to determine students' success in mastering each lesson. Although intended for use in the classroom, Launch into Reading Success is also appropriate for parent or homeschool usage.
Both authors hold Ph.D. degrees, from universities in Great Britain and Canada, respectively, a fact which is occasionally betrayed by their language usage. However, most of these occasions occur in sections designed for the lesson provider, so they should not cause students any distress. A few of the words/pictures chosen may seem unfamiliar or even inappropriate for American students (e.g., God, cross); however, with some minor adaptation all lessons could be suitable for all audiences. This book is a valuable tool for a highly specialized group.
