In Look!..The Chuckle Book!, Cormac G. McDermott supplies readers with an artillery of jokes that broach numerous topics, including but not limited to sports, friendship, sex, and celebrities. The author's unflinching audacity—there are jokes that will leave readers admiring the author's fearless temperament—separates this joke book from your typical, run-of-the-mill joke book, which becomes distinctly apprehensive when encountering a sensitive topic.
Interestingly, McDermott employs different delivery styles for his jokes; in the first chapter, they take the form of a narrative. The ensuing chapter reads like the script of a play as it pokes fun at last names. Later, an entire chapter is dedicated to the author's free-flowing stream of consciousness—a clear indication of the author's prospects as a stand-up comedian. Varied sentence structure results in an engaged readership anticipating the next uncontrollable joke. From comical comparisons of boxing icons Muhammad Ali and Joe Frasier to hysterical portrayals of famous regions like Dublin and Madrid, McDermott does an exceptional job of leaving nothing and no one out of this compilation.
Toward the end of the book, McDermott offers an intriguing and thoughtful discourse on biblical elements, including the origin of theories, and a segment on self-indulgence. Albeit a joke book, readers will notice a distinct shift in tone and purpose as they approach the end. Ultimately, this joke book is a worthwhile read that will not only alleviate the stress of reality, but also offer a fresh, natural perspective on many topics that are considered serious in today's modern world.
