Making Your Goals First Class by Ervin Goode Trafford Publishing
book review by Barbara Bamberger Scott
"Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated everyday."
In his first foray into the self-help genre, Ervin Goode draws a parallel between goal-setting and air flight. Drawing inspiration from a turbulent flight to Houston, which may have been the impetus for the book itself, Goode takes the reader through a five point plan (Focus, Faith, Flexibility, Follow-through, and Fun) for goal-making and keeping them throughout the years. With allusions to air-travel throughout, Goode refers to faith as "having confidence knowing you will reach your destination even if you have to detour through a couple different cities to get where you are going."
Goode doesn't offer an abundance of extra facts or references to his writing. At only thirty-three pages, the book provides little room to expound. However, it can be useful as a handbook, to remind the reader of their objectives when times are tough and discouragement could "fly in." Goode brings his faith in God and his experience with a large corporation into his suggestions. He urges the reader to write down their goals, and includes pages at the end of each chapter for this purpose. This is a nice touch and further reason for the reader to keep the book on hand. The writing isn't perfect; misspelled words, typos, and poorly worded sentences persist. But this does not detract from the simple yet valuable directions offered within this manual. Making Your Goals First Class is a well-intended addition to the self-help genre and can be beneficial for those seeking a simple method for staying on task.
