Every night we dream. Much of what we experience during these periods of slumber seems to merely be twisted versions of our memories, fears, fantasies, or perhaps recent events retold with more than a touch of surrealism. But what if this dream landscape was actually an alternate reality, a place where one could not only encounter other dreamers from around the globe but meet up with them at will? And what if this other place was also a potential staging ground for a mystical battle that might eventually result in one person gaining the ability to dominate all beings and thought worlds as the Dreamlord? With these ideas in mind, Khanna offers her audience a fast-paced fantasy adventure where almost nothing can be taken at face value.
This second novel in the author's The Dream Hiker series for young adults continues the story of Jack Treole, a seventeen-year-old high school student who finds himself caught up in a power struggle where it is becoming increasingly difficult to know whom to trust. He is initially overjoyed that he has discovered that the enigmatic Yuquoa is his long lost father and is happy to join him in the fight to keep the evil Seitto from gaining control of the mysterious conches and becoming the Dreamlord. But when his friend Selenia is put in grave danger and events begin to indicate that he has been lied to and manipulated by the one person he wants desperately to believe in, Jack starts to question who the real enemy is. Khanna deftly recreates that not-quite-real atmosphere of the land of dreams in her narrative. Fans of her first book will undoubtedly enjoy this sequel, and the superb cliffhanger at the end should have them clamoring for more.
