Mountains, Mists, and Myths

"Legend spoke of bewitchment, enchanted mortals disappearing into a sidhe never seen for many years."

Earth has been ravaged by climate change and pollution. Running out of space, nations are trying to leave their devastated home and find other planets to live on and establish colonies. When spaceships discover a habitable planet that is similar to Earth and the United World Government starts negotiations, its inhabitants ask for Jon Strider to represent Earth. Jon is a former soldier skilled in all manner of martial arts, but has a history of insubordination with the UWG and marches to his own drumbeat. At the No Name Planet, as it is called, Jon meets beings from Celtic mythology, the elf-like Tuatha De, along with the mysterious being called Kann, who knows more than he lets on. Befriending a beautiful elf maiden, Fedelm, Jon starts to feel at home with the Tuatha De. But even Fedelm and her people keep secrets, and when Jon and the representatives from Earth are trying to negotiate for inhabiting the planet, Jon feels caught between the two sides, as they are both hiding information from him.

This is a well-written book, and the author displays a significant amount of knowledge in Celtic mythology, as is evident from Jon's conversations with the Tuatha De. The characters of Jon Strider and Fedelm, the elven maiden, are well-fleshed out along with many others. At times, the author uses run-on sentences which slow the book down, but in general, this is a great read with the all the mystique of faraway worlds, otherworldly aliens, and hidden agendas, which the main character must sort out. This is a good book for the lovers of fantasy and science fiction, Lord of the Rings trilogy buffs, and Celtic history aficionados.
