A Prayer for Supernatural Favor by Kentrell M. Liddell illustrated by Charlo Nocete Trafford Publishing
book review by Karyn Saemann
"Remember, praying is simply having a conversation with God. Consider Him your best friend. Feel comfortable talking to Him."
Simple is always best when you're trying something new. This prayer primer for new Christians is straightforward and succinct. The twelve pages are at most a 10-mintue read, but there's a lot of good packed inside the covers. It is an ideal format for daily reference. Readers will find themselves returning to it routinely as a quick, accessible manual for prayer. And it is heartfelt. Liddell begins with a foreword in which she suggests that readers pray to God like they're talking with a friend. He will listen, she writes.
Later, Liddell presents the four elements of ACTS, which stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. ACTS is a widely-used mnemonic, not something that Liddell invented, but she uses it well here. In four, nicely illustrated double-page spreads, the author defines each element and suggests how to make each the basis of a four-part prayer routine. Readers should work through all four parts during a prayer session. For each individual element of ACTS, the author also offers a sample prayer. The text is simple enough that it's suitable for teens, and the cartoon-like illustrations will draw that audience. Liddell wraps up the book with the text of a brief prayer that she says she has prayed every day for more than ten years. This book is uncomplicated and inspiring.
