Searching for Soul: A Survivor's Guide by Bobbe Tyler Swallow Press
book review by Karolina Blaha-Black
"Becoming enlightened is work for a lifetime; it goes on as long as one believes that self-awareness is the way for meaning to enter a life."
In her journey to reach self-awareness and inner peace, Bobbe Tyler offers a glimpse into the dark corners of her soul and illuminates her long-forgotten shadows. The result is a searing self-portrayal. The reader can easily relate to Tyler's rich narrative, as she searches her soul and self-conscious awareness from angles that include everyday struggles with marriage, divorce, family problems, childhood quandaries, addiction, and recovery.
How spirituality fits into all that we experience is her primary concern. In seventeen chapters, she examines her life's path through the many aspects that are the cornerstones of success, friendships, marriage, career, aging, and many other relevant life topics. Especially eye-opening is the chapter on death and the lessons we can learn from not fearing it, but accepting and befriending the inevitable. As Tyler puts it, death is more a perception than an experience.
Tyler sheds light on our struggle to understand ourselves, our soul, and our many roles that we experience through our lifetime. She employs numerous quotes throughout the book, notably from Freud, Krishnamurti, Jung, and others to illustrate her points. At the end of the book is a helpful query, called The Harvesting Wisdom Interview, in which a series of questions helps readers discover more about themselves and offers guidance in their personal journeys. This book is perfect for people who want to learn more about themselves and their role in the universe.
