Sweet Harvest

"Help others if you can, a smile, whisper, and avoid a shout. Progress is determined by our goodness reflecting from our inside out."

This book is a collection of poetry that may not have an overt theme, but focuses on qualities such as dignity, empowerment, and respect. Written in a modern, free-flowing, and slam style, the poet muses on circumstances in her life that she finds troubling or worth examining. From an approaching divorce and the "player" lifestyle to inequalities faced by women and racial minorities, no topic is too personal or taboo. Despite the heavy content, the overall message of the book is one of positivity, working to fix the things that don't work, and celebrating the things that do but perhaps go unappreciated. These are poems of a new breed that challenge and inspire readers, conveying the same classical intimacy that the medium is so perfectly suited for.

It doesn't take more than a couple of poems from this book for readers to become acquainted and familiar with the author's unique voice and perspective. By foregoing rigid structure yet still rhyming and using more natural yet eloquent vocabulary, it becomes easier to form a picture and understanding of the poet's feelings and perspectives. This is the second book of a series. With more than 100 poems, Sweet Harvest takes a longer reading session to get through or can be consumed over an extended period of time. Poetry classicists can find plenty to analyze and study here, exploring the more jazzy style of these verses, while more modern-minded poetry lovers will feel right at home with the cadence and subject matter in these poems.
