Hot-headed Sebastian is already dealing with loss when the world he knows comes crashing down around him. Tesla delivers a thrilling and mysterious story delivered with excellent, punchy writing. Sebastian's world is ravaged by modern technology and finds innovation in the old strength of steam power. From cyborgs to aborigines, Lingane spins a story that spans many eras all living in one time and place. The clash of past and future is balanced perfectly to create a setting wonderfully at odds with itself. Comic book-like illustrations and occasional page embellishments add to the arresting effect of the story. Roles are fleshed out on the fly as thrilling obstacles and dangers are flung at the cast of characters. Sebastian's companions are a vibrant and varied bunch, sometimes even overshadowing the protagonist with their quirks and personalities. It quickly becomes clear that there are no small characters in Tesla: Everyone is significant.
Little by little, layers of the story are peeled off to uncover the truth about the world and how each character fits into the puzzle. Action-packed and gripping, Tesla is a must-read for any young adult or steampunk fan.
