The Benevolence Within
by Cecilia Hill

"This is life: it’s not at all pretty, easy, guaranteed, rewarded, or complimentary. You have to deal with the darkness, surround your life with light."

The tragedy of September 11, 2001, prompted the author to move along a path toward having a closer, more trusting association with Jesus Christ. Retirement provided the opportunity to pursue a life-long interest in writing. Hill’s muse inspired the recording of her thoughts in the form of poems and ponderings. Her husband encouraged her to collect, organize, and publish these writings.

The range of topics covered within this short book is noteworthy. Several pieces reveal a mystical view of traditional Christianity. Some chronicle how Hill is able to receive miraculous warnings (“Angel Prep” and “An Angel Voice”) or to perceive those who are dearly loved as special angels sent to brighten her life (“Isia, My Sister” and “S. Anastasia”). Other pieces deal with her feelings of being overwhelmed by undeniable failures in her life. Writing provides a way to recall and deal with buried feelings in order to keep progressing along her chosen spiritual path.

A passionate poet, Hill can move a reader to empathy or admiration and inspire hope for a joy-filled future. One poem documents the planting and subsequent cutting down of a tree, and then boldly declares that regardless of circumstances, “there will always be a tree for me.” A gifted writer, she is able to surprise via thought-provoking words and unexpected imagery. She includes for her readers a series of poems about the seasons that bring alive the pleasures of snow, flowers, and butterflies. As a seasoned traveler who has lived abroad, Hill shares unique perspectives. For example, “Hue Dilemma” reveals the true spiritual beauty of racial differences. The author’s book showcases Hill’s talents to both those who know her well and to new readers who will appreciate a breath of fresh air and honesty.
