Theodore and the Enchanted Bookstore: Tale of the Spectacular Spectacles
by K. Kibbee
Corgi Bits, a Incorgnito Publishing Press

"Theodore whimpered and let the floor numb his belly until sleep took him."

Theodore is a young corgi who loves his owner despite being somewhat of a klutz. When his owner has a child of her own, she becomes impatient and distant with Theodore, keeping him in her garage before eventually just giving him away to a kennel. Separated from the ones he loves, Theodore becomes despondent and refuses to eat until a teenage boy and a kindly bookstore owner take notice of him. Sam, the man who owns the bookstore, adopts Theodore in order to add some livelihood and companionship to his store, but soon learns that Theodore's clumsiness could be a potential problem for him. During a reading session with some children, one of the little girls realizes that the reason Theodore is always bumping into things is because he has poor eyesight, so Sam begins to search for a tiny pair of glasses to help his new friend.

Focusing on the cuteness and lovability of corgis, this is a story for children and dog lovers about acceptance and understanding. When we meet Theodore, we know that he is well-meaning and yearning to be accepted the way he once was, but nobody is aware of his poor eyesight, Theodore included. By observing and understanding his problems, Sam and the children in his reading group are able to solve them. Aside from the core message of the story, it also is an entertaining read, with full-page illustrations, silly humor, and a touch of the magical and fantastic when Theodore's glasses finally arrive. By the looks of things, Theodore and Sam's adventures are only beginning, but this book is a great introduction to some very memorable characters and one that all dog-lovers will enjoy diving into.
