Tusks

"It let out a loud bellow, sending shivers down both the men's spines."

When Cheyenne Cole's father dies, he goes to Africa to fulfill a mission that his father never got the chance to do—to save the elephants from poachers who illegally hunt them for their ivory tusks. Africa is filled with inexplicable adventure and danger, and while Cheyenne doesn't know exactly how to carry out his plan once he's there, he certainly didn't expect arms dealers and the Russian mafia to be in the mix. Add an elephant that has a lust for blood (after it is wounded by a poacher) and a fatal attraction to the girlfriend of the local arms dealer, and things have just gotten more complicated for Cheyenne. Will he be able to fulfill his father's lifelong wish, or will Africa be his last destination stop?

Hale writes a thrilling adventure that is difficult to put down. What makes the story fascinating is that the main protagonist, Cheyenne, faces multiple obstacles that are unforeseen, yet they give the story momentum with unexpected surprises that catch the reader off guard. It isn't just a story about saving elephants from poachers. It's a story about a young ex-military man honoring his father's memory. It's about the terrible beauty and danger of a foreign country. The author does not shy away from writing about the illegal trafficking of weapons, abusive relationships, the killing of white farmers in Africa, or tribal genocide. Hale integrates these issues, however, in a way that's thought-provoking without being offensive.

This story is an exciting read that will particularly attract those who love exploration stories and characters who are forced to adapt when faced with adversity and the consequences of decisions they make.
