Don’t let the overwrought title fool you. There’s a sharply written, fast-moving thriller within the pages of Mr. Seller’s inaugural novel. While an intricate plot is at the heart of this story, it’s the author’s penchant for action and predilection for pace that keeps you racing from one chapter to the next. The story opens with a bang, literally—two bangs in fact. They’re the sound of explosions on a luxury yacht. An injured husband rushes to his wife’s side, scoops her up in his arms, and literally tosses her into the sea. Is he trying to save her? Is he trying to kill her? Neither you nor she can be sure, and that’s just the opening salvo in a string of mysteries and surprises to come.
Set amid the sun-splashed glamour of Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and the surrounding environs, Sellers weaves a compelling tale of high finance, low morals, loyal comradeship, and disloyal chicanery. Two high flying hedge fund managers are up to their eyeballs in questionable business practices, SEC and FBI investigations, death threats to and from their clients, plus kidnapping attempts by Chinese Communist thugs. The author, a former pension and investment specialist, does an excellent job of keeping the international monetary manipulations easy to understand. He also is more than adept at creating characters, as compassionate as they are crafty, and plot points that pass the plausibility test. This is an involving and fun yarn that will keep you wanting to know what happens next. As one shock leads to another, readers won’t necessarily be sure where this runaway train is going, but they’ll be happy to be along for the ride.
