Set within the author's previous Children of the Knight series, this book picks up with Sir Lance and his Knights of New Camelot focusing on a mission of environmental progress. The trained, dedicated children that make up Lance's kingdom team up with Earth Warriors, a coalition of kids whose passion is saving the ecosystem from the damage done by overconsumption and pollution. Led by Billy, Enya, Itzamna, and Chris, Lance's brigade of Earth Warriors are organized and willing to do whatever it takes to change the planet for the better. The leaders of big oil and food businesses, however, are determined to protect their bottom lines and prevent a children's revolution from upending their businesses. Their determination puts all the Earth Warriors at risk, particularly Lance, as his status as a figurehead is essential to rallying children everywhere to pitch in and do their share.
With all the action and personable characters readers can expect from a young adult novel, this is a story with a serious, pertinent moral. That being said, the book avoids coming off as overly preachy but rather persuasive instead. In the appendices are a myriad of resources and ideas that children, parents, and educators can use to take the core principles of the Earth Warriors and bring about their goals in the real world. Beyond the message of the book, there's still an entertaining, thrilling story that shifts from upbeat and hopeful to dangerous and worrisome in a heartbeat. As a stand-alone title, readers need not get entrenched in the mythology of the Children of the Knight series, but it certainly contributes to the characters and provides a history for what happens in this book. With friendly, bantering dialogue, danger around every corner, and a dream of a world where everyone works together, this is a story that best suits middle and high school students, but carries a message that everyone can appreciate.
