When I Am the Leader... by Fannie T. Brown Trafford Publishing
book review by Caroline Blaha-Black
"I will be a member of the senate that forms the government's ability to 'check and balance' the powers of the elements, in the federal government. But, I may advise and consent to the President's government appointments."
Brown's book is designed to teach young children about the various leadership positions in the state and federal government, and it inspires them to pursue these positions as they grow up. The book makes a good teaching supplement in the classroom, and it entertains as well as educates kids about the many leadership positions to which they can aspire and become one day. Brown uses rhyme, facts, and simple illustrations to convey her message, and highlights many governmental positions of interest- senator, judge, councilwoman, and governor, among others. For example, the section titled "Governor" teaches children that the governor is an elected leader and that he or she strongly influences the actions of the state. At the end of the book there is an ample section with lined pages for notes, which is very handy for children and for educators alike.
Brown, a retired educator, used material that stimulates children's imaginations for a successful future. The only drawback in the book is the illustrations, which are rather plain, black, and resemble paper cutouts. Colored pictures might convey their message better. The book's cover is glossy, attractive, and is pleasing to the eye. This is a perfect book for parents, teachers, children, and could be an effective teaching tool in the classroom.
