The five stories in Hashagen’s book chronicle fighting large fires in New York between 1881 and 1912. The stories are based on historical accounts of real fires and those who fought them or were caught in them. Each narrative focuses on a young person who acted heroically in the situation and assisted the firefighters and/or those trapped by the fire. In addition, the reader is introduced to a few key members of the fire crews working the featured fire. The character’s backstories humanize those risking lives in the blazes, and the action and harrowing circumstances create weighty tension. Also, as a retired New York firefighter, Hashagen’s descriptions of the fires, the circumstances surrounding their spread, and the difficulties fighting them are genuinely authentic.
Hashagen’s passion for firefighting and the history of the NYFD propel these stories with great tension and even greater insight into the dangers of fighting fires during this time period. The knowledge of the time’s firefighting apparatus and proper use gives the stories a sense of realism and allows the reader to glimpse firsthand the courage of these firemen and other young heroes. The addition of the illustrations and historical photos have a meaningful impact on the narrative and the reader’s ability to visualize the stories. The stories are well written and easily understood; they are reminiscent of the action and adventure tales found in a magazine like Boy’s Life or those belonging in the I Survived series of books. These stories won’t just interest those interested in firefighting or history; their tales of courage, daring, and sacrifice will find a home in the hands of most adventure fans.
