M. Stuart Madden

As a law professor, I became interested in and wrote scholarly articles on themes of Ancient Law and Ethics, Greco-Roman Mythology and Folklore. When I became a grandfather, I enjoyed reading to him from sources grounded in Mythology and Folklore, with the Folklore derived principally from pre-literate and later literate societies from around the world. No matter how different might be the geographic and cultural origins of the Myths or Folklore in particular, I found commonality between and among the respective traditions, with the same individual sagacity, foolishness, strengths and foibles repeatedly at play.

"Moral Telos of Greek and Roman Mythology" was an article that eventually inspired Myth, Folklore, and Ancient Ethics, a philosophical inquiry into the nature of actions not through their causes but instead through the lens of their purposes and goals.

About the Author: M. Stuart Madden, co-author or editor of ten volumes of academic, professional, and legal educational works for publishers that include West Publishing (Thomson-Reuters); Lexis/Matthew Bender Publishing; and Cambridge University Press. He is also author of five refereed articles on themes of Ancient Law, Myth and Folklore.
