Jim West goes on a golfing trip to Myrtle Beach with a group of friends for a few days. But the stay turns deadly when Doug, one of the friends, is murdered. The police question Jim and his friends, but law enforcement does not have a particular suspect in mind. Detective Nichols asks for Jim’s help because of his Air Force Office of Special Investigations background. He reluctantly agrees to help the police. Someone pretending to be Detective Nichols lures Jim into the parking garage and tries to kill him with a golf club. Fortunately, Jim makes it out alive. After the attempted murder, Jim is determined to find Doug’s killer. However, the more Jim investigates the murder, the more he puts himself in harm’s way.
Through this thriller, Doerr explores relationships among friends and appearances that may be deceitful. The group of friends sets off to have a good time together till the death of their friend shakes things up. The author does a good job of giving each character a distinct voice that makes them stand out. On top of that, the dialogue gives a clear idea about each character’s personality. For instance, Doerr depicts Jim as a decent and honest man who is ready to do the right thing for the sake of all. In addition, the book underlines how paranoia can make people point fingers at one another. At this point, there is a sense of walls closing in and an unbearable feeling of secrets being exposed. So, seemingly the only way for the characters to escape these emotions is to turn on one another. Readers will likely appreciate this book because of its many twists and turns.
Doerr's No One Else To Kill was a 2013 Eric Hoffer Award Commercial Fiction category First Runner-Up.
